Carol Piner starts her book with a fight in the kitchen between herMama and Daddy. Carol describes the children, the youngest Callie, who are allexcited about the fight as being "like good dogs, mouths drooling, tailswagging in anticipation". Her depiction of this hilarious kitchen scene isclassic. Not for one moment do you think that she felt it was violence. To her,it was as much fun as she could have as she wriggled around on the floorscreaming, "Git him, Mama, git him".

The pace never slows. Carolis a story teller and her story is told in a coherent, chronological way. Goingfrom story to story you realize it's true when she calls herself a disastermagnet. Absolutely no one has ever lived the kind of extraordinary life she didand not come out feeling like a victim.

Not with Callie. She laughsand chortles where the rest of us would fall down and bawl. With the uncannyability to bounce back like she was on a trampoline, she takes us up and downwith her; laughing and crying all the way.
